Harvesting the crops for the cows is a time sensitive and labor
intensive activity that takes place from May through November.
After the first planting is done, within the next 28-32 days the first
fields of alfalfa are ready to be cut, chopped and harvested. The cycle
repeats three to four times per field throughout the summer and has to
be done during time critical periods, which is why you will often see
your friends and neighbors out in their equipment harvesting late into
the evening.
The more than 10,000 acres of corn are harvested between September and November, with different fields harvested at different times so that the
delivery of feed to the Milk Source farms is choreographed in such a way
that there are no traffic jams in our neighborhoods as the tons of vital
food for our cows is delivered -- fresh -- to our farms.
